What Does Centaury Help With...

10ml and 25ml Centaury Remedy bottles

Centaury restores the qualities of inner strength & self-determination. Those in need of Centaury have a misplaced sense of service and believe that they must put others needs before their own. They appear to lack the will power to say ‘no’ and are easily dominated and open to being taken advantage of by those with stronger personalities. As a consequence they often wear themselves out in service to others and do not develop their own individuality or creativity. Those in the negative Centaury state are often seen as being ‘a doormat for others’.

Dr Bach’s Description of Centaury

Dr Edward Bach portrait

"Kind, quiet, gentle people who are over-anxious to serve others. They overtax their strength in their endeavours. Their wish so grows upon them that they become more servants than willing helpers. Their good nature leads them to do more than their own share of work, and in so doing they may neglect their own particular mission in life"

From the Twelve Healers & Other Remedies - By Dr Edward Bach ( 1936 edition )

More Insights Into Centaury

"Centaury is so helpful for restoring balance if you’re abandoning yourself and your own needs because you’ve unconsciously absorbed the idea that other people’s needs matter more than yours"

“Centaury is the remedy to take if you put other people’s needs before your own, have people pleaser tendencies, and habitually find yourself being of service to others at your own expense. Ways this self-sacrificing pattern can show up include saying ‘I don’t mind, whatever’s easy’ when somebody asks you what you’d like because you don’t want to be a bother, or helping others even when it doesn’t really suit you because you’d hate to be seen as selfish. Centaury is so helpful for restoring balance if you’re abandoning yourself and your own needs because you’ve unconsciously absorbed the idea that other people’s needs matter more than yours.” Jackie Stewart - Crystal Herbs

"People in the negative Centaury state often say, while helplessly shrugging their shoulders, "I simply can't refuse," or "I'm just unable to say no." Outsiders often shake their heads at the way a Centaury type makes himself a doormat. Strong Centaury types often complain of tiredness and being overworked, a result of taking on too much in their desire to help. Apart from this, however, they don't consider their state a painful one, failing to recognize its full implications, and therefore also failing to notice that with all their service to others, they aren't fulfilling their own purpose in life. The motive behind their helpfulness is nothing but the very human desire for recognition and validation." The Encyclopedia of Bach Flower Therapy by Mechthild Scheffer

Centaury flowers

"Centaury people find it difficult to assert their own will and purpose in the face of the dominant presence of others. The plant demonstrates how it is necessary to make a space for oneself to live in. Bach intended that the remedy will help, so that you may become an active, positive worker instead of a passive agent. He saw in this a polarity between weakness and strength. Weakness at the soul level shows itself in a lack of self-assertion, this in turn shows as a weakness of will, this then leads to a weakness physiologically. Bach then went on to say: "Those who are weak, pale and have no strength, just feeble and tired, will be much helped by Centaury." Bach Flower Remedies Form & Function by Julian Barnard

"The Centaury people are quiet, sometimes timid, lacking in individuality, docile and always willing to do anything for others. They are submissive, easily imposed upon and often become the prey of the unscrupulous people who take advantage of their good nature. They are the "door-mats" that are both used and overworked by others because they do not have the strength of will to refuse; in this way they increase the dominance of the bully. They become easily tired, and often seem to be drained of their vitality. In appearance they are often languid and pale, although actually they are mentally alert, active, and wide awake."
